Information is the most fundamental element of democracy. It is the basis for understanding the world around us: how we analyze social issues, assess challenges, determine priorities, form opinions and evaluate our options. It is the raw material out of which we make decisions and take informed action.

We must move beyond the misnomer of “fake news” and teach students to more precisely identify the many types of misleading, inaccurate and intentionally false information they encounter. To start the day, we will outline the key learning objectives, skills and knowledge to define what it means to be “news-literate.” Throughout the day, we will refer to these as you learn from and engage with journalists and are introduced to teaching resources from NLP.
